Tom Ogle is the person who invented a device that replaced the carburetor and allowed his 4000-pound car to get 100 miles per gallon.
It does seem impossible to drive for 100 miles on a gallon of gasoline, especially if you have fuel consuming cars like big SUVs with large wheels, then you will be pretty much familiar with how gasoline can make you broke.
But, Tom Ogle thought. Differently, he couldn’t actually clear his idea of creating a device that replaced carburetor in many internal combustion engines with one that achieved 100 mpg, because he died too soon before he could get even commercial his idea.
He was just 24 years old; when he expired, his death is still controversial. However, his theory of engine always caused fire whenever there was a debate among automobile enthusiasts.
What is MPG?
MPG is an acronym that stands for Mile per Gallon. It is used to know how fuel-efficient a car can be; it also tells how far a car can travel if you put just a single gallon of petrol or diesel in its tanks.
This standardized term helps you in comparing the cars based on their efficiency, but it doesn’t always tell the real fuel economy. Tom Ogle is known as one of the first people to achieve a modest 100 mpg.
Importance of MPG
The more the MPG, the more is the efficiency of the car. The gauge Miles per Gallon is mainly used by environmentalists to filter out the car models that are pollutants.
There are some hybrid models that have achieved great mpg ranging from 500 mpg to 600 mpg. Those cars that have more miles per gallon capacity are pocket-friendly.
Hybrid cars are actually quite famous as a crossbreed between fuel and electricity because they can switch between fuel as well as battery, so they are called hybrid cars that use very little fuel.
Almost 30 to 60 percent of the fuel is saved in hybrid cars, but they need to be charged. Electric cars are charged by plugging them into a socket, while in hybrid cars, the battery charges as you move on.
How the engine works – made by Tom Ogle
Tom Ogle was an inventor who tested his innovation in 1970 Ford Galaxie, and he made it clear to the world that a 427 hp V8 can do 100 mpg. He also tried his idea on his 4000-pound car, and the results were great. He had confidence in his invention and knew his job.
His engine had a black box filter instead of the carburetor and a fuel pump that is pretty much common in many internal combustion engines. He injected the vaporized gasoline directly into the combustion chamber instead of using the liquid form.
Many scientists were surprised by Tom’s invention and checked for hidden fuels in the car, as the car saved a lot of fuel, but of course, there wasn’t any.
Tom originally got the idea of this invention while operating lawnmower. He applied the idea of the fuel-efficient engine to the lawnmower.
While working, he accidentally created a hole in the lawnmower; he used a vacuum line that runs from the carburetor to the engine; this way, he was able to run his lawnmower without the use of carburetor. The most surprising fact was that the lawnmower was able to run for 96 hours with fuel from its small tank.
This was his first try, and after succeeding, he tried his ideas on the automobile engine. However, at first, the engine tanks collapsed without the carburetor, and the car got slow –of an average of 20 mph at 8 miles per gallon.
After that, he made changes in his idea when he observed that the gas tank was freezing; he then decided to heater coils to melt the ice and heat the gas tank. This led to the car doing 100 miles per gallon.
All the investors that he contacted were greatly impressed and convinced of his idea of 100 mpg. At that time, they were only worried about who would take the responsibility of the patents; all the investors wanted to have a larger piece of the cake.
However, nothing went as planned because Tom died mysteriously, and his invention wasn’t completed and lost track with time.
Pros and cons of Ogle Engine
Pros of Ogle engine 100 MPG
The advantages of the Ogle engine include many environmentally friendly features.
The carbon is produced in a lesser amount in Tom’s engine. That is why fewer carbon emissions are spread in the environment hence making them perfect in keeping the surroundings clean, so they are referred to as environment-friendly.
They are easy to maintain and extremely affordable because you don’t need to visit the fuel station again and again and spend money on refilling, they are completely suitable for cars for city drives.
These engines know how to make you value them because they don’t need much maintenance, so you don’t need to hassle around. They have higher resale value.
Another great advantage of having this engine is that the tax credits are awarded to the drivers of hybrid vehicles in some countries. Which sweetens the deal for many drivers, and they go for it without much hesitation.
While in some countries, the car owners are even motivated and encouraged to purchase these engines.
Cons of Ogle engine 100 MPG When
Tom invented this engine, it sure had many pros, but like everything has some disadvantages, it also has some cons which are as follows:
Most of the models of his invention are not very stylish and attractive from the appearance because the main focus has always been on fuel efficiency.
If we compare MPG engines with fuel guzzlers, then it is less powerful than fuel guzzlers.
The technology for a hybrid is not that affordable; it is more expensive to maintain than gas-powered vehicles, making it difficult for a mediocre class to afford it.
Why no one actually developed his product?
ü Although many people are aware of the story of Ogle, who invented a device in 1977 that can be installed in any car and provide the owner the automobile that could go 100 miles per gallon with zero carbon emissions.
But the question arises that why no one develops and utilizes his product? Here is what you should know before assuming anything.
If we develop his product now on a large scale, using the internet, and people start to put this on their cars, it would allow them to save a lot of money on fuel and time on gas stations; it will also stop the mouths of the people who want to tax carbon footprints like communists, globalists and maniacal greenies.
But due to his sudden and early death, he couldn’t prove the world about how important his invention will be; many people in some parts didn’t even know about it, so they didn’t develop it.
Is Tom Ogle 100 MPG engine actually feasible?
Another question that comes in mind is that 100 mpg engine even feasible?
Well, a common-modern petrol engine that is mostly used now a day has an efficiency of around 30% .i.e. 30% of energy in the fuel is converted to motion, and the rest is wasted as heat by the cooling system and the exhaust.
By having a 100 mpg, it would mean to reduce those losses by an intense amount. These losses are not in the control of fuel injection, fuel injections can’t prevent heat loss through cylinder walls, but they can reduce it.
Ogle wanted to increase the efficiency, when he first ran his experiments, the efficiency was far less than even 30%; the exhaust gases contained unburned fuel. He replaced that with an injection system that would increase efficiency greatly. Going from 15 to 30 mpg became possible.
According to Ogle, he succeeded because he evaporated the gasoline instead of letting the carburetor draw droplets on petrol into the engine. If we compare it with liquefied petroleum gas, then classical liquefied petroleum gas systems evaporate the LPG.
It is true that after knowing this, many modern systems decided to switch their systems to liquid LPG injection in order to increase efficiency. In case Ogle was right, liquid LPG would be less efficient than a vapor system.
Final Thoughts
Tom Ogle engine was a complete engine by consuming 100 Miles per Gallon, but hybrid cars led to a 30 % to 60 % reduction in fuel consumption if compared by gasoline vehicles. Cars with higher MPG are useful in earning tax credits from them; they are also environmentally friendly because they have zero carbon emissions.
Also, you don’t need to visit gas stations often and waste your time there; it is ideal for city traveling. However, this engine is not that powerful as compared to gasoline vehicles.
